DC snow forecast: Are schools closed tomorrow?

WASHINGTON – The first significant blast of winter weather this season covered the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia areas with snow on Monday, prompting most school districts in the area to close. But will schools close again on Tuesday?

With more snow expected Monday night and a refreeze anticipated, it is possible school systems will close or delay their opening times on Tuesday. The decision to delay or close due to inclement weather is determined by several factors, including road conditions.

How do schools decide to close?

D.C. Public Schools also consider temperature and wind chill, levels of snow and ice, the availability of public transit, and the forecast.

“It is our long-standing practice to remain open as long as roads are safe, open and passable, and predicted to remain so. In the event of inclement weather, the decision to open or close schools will be made prior to 5:30 a.m. on the day in question and communicated as soon as possible to the media, parents and staff,” Prince George’s County Public Schools says on its website.

Fairfax County Public Schools say they review information from emergency management and state highway administrators about road conditions, in addition to inspecting sidewalks and parking lots.
