Georgia winter storm: Delta announces fare waivers after canceling 500 flights due to weather

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines says it has canceled hundreds of flights due to the winter storm. They are offering customers a waiver.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport until 2 p.m. As of 9:20 a.m., Delta said all of their runways at the Atlanta airport were closed.

As a winter storm made its way across the South, Delta said they had to cancel roughly 500 flights across their network for Friday. They added that more adjustments to flight schedules could be coming through the weekend.

“Delta is managing worse-than-expected winter weather across the Southeast this weekend, including at our Atlanta hub, where all runways were closed by 9:20 a.m. ET. We have canceled ~500 Delta and Delta Connection flights for Jan. 10,” the company said in a statement.

“On Jan. 8, we issued a fare-difference waiver to allow customers to move existing bookings around the storm forecast. Delta will consider additional schedule adjustments as conditions dictate to safely manage through this storm’s impact. Customers can continue to monitor and manage their flights through the Delta app.”

The company said the safety of Delta’s customers and employees was their main focus as they mange the disruptions to operations and that they are working with airport officials to clear runways of snow and ice.

In the meantime, customers have travel waivers available for certain cities and fare-difference waivers for customers who have to move their bookings due to the storm forecast.

Anyone with significant flight delays or cancellations can “also review flight options and rebook their itinerary on the Fly Delta app or My Trips on delta.com. In addition, customers traveling on a U.S. domestic itinerary who experience a flight delay of three hours or more and choose not to fly — either on the original delayed flight or on a rebooked itinerary — are entitled to receive a full refund for the unflown portion of their ticket (including any ancillary fees paid or checked baggage charges). The same refund eligibility applies if a customer experiences a flight delay of six hours or more on an international itinerary and chooses not to fly.”

The refund options available have been slightly expanded due to recent legislation by U.S. Congress improving the rights of passengers in events of cancellations or delays.
