Jaden Ivey’s breakout season for the Detroit Pistons came to an abrupt and painful end Wednesday night.
The former Purdue guard suffered what was later diagnosed as a broken fibula in his left leg. ESPN first reported the extent of the injury.
The Detroit Free Press cited team sources who said preliminary tests suggested the 22-year-old did not suffer additional ligament or tendon damage. There is currently no timetable for his return.
Ivey scored 22 points while hitting 5-of-6 from 3-point range in Wednesday’s home win over the Orlando Magic. Magic guard Cole Anthony dove for a loose ball and collided with Ivey’s legs. Ivey immediately fell to the court. Players and personnel from both teams surrounded him while he was treated by the Pistons’ medical staff. Anthony was among those visibly emotional at the scene.
Ivey had started all 30 games for the Pistons, averaging a career-best 17.6 points with 40.9% 3-point shooting.
