Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams reclaimed the record for the longest touchdown run by an Alabama alumnus in the NFL playoffs on Saturday night, and this time, he got the record for the longest by a player from an Alabama high school or college, too.
Williams scored on a 61-yard run with 4:01 remaining in the first half of the Lions’ Divisional Weekend game against the Washington Commanders at Ford Field in Detroit.
The play surpassed the 44-yarder by Derrick Henry for the longest touchdown run by a former Alabama player in an NFL postseason game. Henry’s touchdown came one week ago in the Baltimore Ravens’ 28-14 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in an AFC Wild-Card Weekend game.
Henry’s run had surpassed Williams’ 42-yard touchdown in the Lions’ 34-31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in last season’s NFC Championship Game on Jan. 28, 2024.
Before Williams’ score on Saturday night, the longest touchdown run in the NFL playoffs by a player from an Alabama high school or college had been 58 yards by former Auburn running back Ronnie Brown in the San Diego Chargers’ 27-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in an AFC Wild-Card Weekend game on Jan. 5, 2014.
Williams has scored four touchdowns on 17 rushing attempts in his NFL career, with two coming in the postseason.
Williams’ touchdown run on Saturday night was the second-longest in Detroit’s playoff history. On Dec. 28, 1952, Doak Walker scored on a 67-yard run in a 17-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Championship Game.
