J K Rowling has expressed her surprise at the literary community’s silence regarding sexual assault allegations against writer Neil Gaiman. Rowling’s comments come as eight women, including a former babysitter for Gaiman’s child, accuse the author of predatory behaviour. Gaiman denies all allegations. Geiman was first accused of sexual assault in 2024.
J K Rowling on Monday spoke about the lack of outrage over sexual assault allegations against writer Neil Gaiman.
Takin to X, Rowling wrote, “The literary crowd that had a hell of a lot to say about Harvey Weinstein before he was convicted has been strangely muted in its response to multiple accusations against Neil Gaiman from young women who’d never met, yet—as with Weinstein—tell remarkably similar stories.”
Rowling’s tweet sparked debate, with one user remarking, “Not surprising. He had some pervy short stories if I remember correctly.” Another user responded, “Once upon a time, such stories were never questioned and instead seen as art. Now? It’s almost like they were living out in the open through their work. Weinstein, Epstein, Ivor Caplin, and now Neil Gaiman. Sad, but also unsettling.”
While Harvey Weinstein was convicted of rape in California and has had his New York rape conviction overturned, more complaints have surfaced accusing the Sandman comics author, a year after he was first accused, reported the Vulture.
The writer’s family babysitter Scarlett Pavlovich has claimed that during her first encounter with Gaiman, he coerced her into taking a bath in their garden tub, later joining her uninvited. She detailed how the encounter escalated into a non-consensual act despite her objections.
Another accuser, Kendra Stout, alleged Gaiman engaged in BDSM practices without discussing boundaries or obtaining consent, leaving her “deeply unsettled.”
In response, Gaiman has denied all allegations. His representatives called the claims “false and deplorable,” attributing some accusations to “false memories.” Despite his rebuttals, these allegations have negatively impacted his work, including delays in the production of Good Omens.
