Teddy Bridgewater is making a return to the NFL with the Detroit Lions after a year away from the game. Signed as a backup to Jared Goff, Bridgewater adds depth and leadership to a team chasing its first Super Bowl title. His experience and veteran presence could be pivotal as Detroit continues its successful season.
Just when you thought Teddy Bridgewater was out of football for good, the veteran quarterback is returning, and he’s choosing a pretty exciting moment in time to do it. The Detroit Lions, currently at 13-2 and chasing the NFC’s No. 1 seed, confirmed Thursday that Bridgewater has signed on to return to their quarterback room. NFL insider Ian Rapoport broke the news first.
Bridgewater returns to the Lions, having not been in the NFL the previous season. In 2024, the former first-round draft pick turned his focus to coaching, helping lead his Miami Northwestern High School alma mater to a Florida Class 3A state championship. But the itch for the big stage doesn’t appear to be that easily broken.
The timing couldn’t be more apt-or, in fact, more fascinating. Bridgewater’s previous stay in Detroit was as Jared Goff’s second in command in a surprising 12-5 Lions campaign during 2023. As much as he did not attempt one pass on his team that season, his being around added that steadying presence to a very veteran-rich Lions outfit. He’s now stepping into an even better prepared-to-push-it-that-ways unit this season.
Bridgewater’s career has been a rollercoaster. Over nine seasons, he has accumulated more than 15,000 passing yards, 75 touchdowns, and 11 rushing scores while maintaining a 33-32 record as a starter. Not the flashiest quarterback in the league, Bridgewater’s composure and experience could be what Detroit needs as they head toward their first Super Bowl title.
His addition strengthens an already talented quarterback room that includes Jared Goff and rookie Hendon Hooker. Whether Bridgewater sees the field or simply bolsters the locker room with his leadership, his presence adds depth to a team firing on all cylinders.
The decision by Bridgewater to return raises an interesting question: why now? With the Lions looking like legitimate Super Bowl contenders, perhaps the appeal of a championship run proved too enticing to resist.
Detroit’s high-powered offense, led by Goff, combined with a stifling defense, has made them a team to beat this season. Bridgewater’s return signals a calculated move for both player and team—a reinforcement just in time for the NFL’s most grueling stretch.
For Bridgewater, this is more than a comeback; it’s a chance at redemption. Even though he’s an old-timer, he has never won a Super Bowl ring. Could this be the storybook ending he has been looking for?
